How to Make the Most Out of Your Newborn Photo Session

Welcoming a new baby into the world is a joyous and exciting time. Those first few days after a baby is born, though, can be a blur for mothers and fathers. What better way save the memories of your tiny bundle of joy than to have photos taken when your baby is a newborn? But how can you make the most of your appointment?
  • Book your appointment for when your baby is 5-7 days old. Now, the timing of the arrival of a baby is an uncertain thing. Book a session well in advance and then let the photographer know if baby comes sooner than expected, or later. That way we can take your baby's photos within the perfect window of 5-7 days. When baby is this old it allows for the most diversity in poses being that he or she will likely sleep through the appointment.

  • Feed baby before you arrive. Things are unpredictable and sometimes this doesn't always work out, and that's okay. If you can plan for feeding baby prior, it will allow for maximum session time which equals more photo opportunities:)
  • Decide who you would like to have featured in the photos. Although the majority of photos will be individual portraits, newborn photos don't just have to be of your baby. We highly recommend pictures of baby with its newly extended family. And that includes you! Your inclination may be to avoid being in the photos, but we encourage you to take advantage of the opportunity to be photographed with your baby, even though you may not be feeling at your absolute best. Include baby's siblings as well! In years to come, you and your child will be glad to have these precious, early photos.
How adorable is this precious moment between Mom, Dad, and baby!

  • Props: We have a collection of baskets, crates, blankets, hats and headbands that we keep at the studio. You are welcome to bring any of your own props. If you have any family heirlooms, toys, hats, props, etc. that you would like to use in your session, please bring them! It adds a beautiful personalized touch.

We love this pearl necklace her mom brought as a prop!
  • We also recommend that you discuss any ideas, props, or poses you have in mind at least a week prior to your session so we can determine what will work best and if it is something we can accommodate.

  • Relax and enjoy yourself! Your newborn photoshoot session is meant to be a fun and relaxing experience. The more at ease you are, the more relaxed baby will be, and thus the better the photos may turn out. Newborn sessions are some of our favorite shoots, so we hope you enjoy them as much as we do!
  • Lastly, don't be afraid to ask questions. We are always here to answer any questions you may have regarding your newborn session :)
