When to take Milestone Photos of Your Baby

With your new baby, you want to photograph every moment and milestone. Time goes by too quickly, and then you look back and all of a sudden your baby is becoming a child and having their first day at school. Pictures help to preserve those milestone age memories for you, and for baby. How often, though, should you get professional photos of your baby? I will explain when it is the best time to photograph your new little addition given your baby’s milestones, and also how to best use additional props to give your photos a personal and creative touch.

-Maternity-

A great time to start your milestone photo journey is when you're pregnant! This is a very special time in your life and the start of your journey with baby. We encourage you to wear an outfit that shows your baby bump, since that is what this photoshoot is all about! Also, bring any props you'd like to include in the photos, whether that be baby shoes, your ultrasound, a banner, or the baby's name. If given a little forethought, props can take your photos to the next level. If you need ideas of what else you might bring, we would be happy to help. Another resource would be to look up "maternity photo props" in Pinterest.
-Newborn-

Newborn photos are probably the most popular milestone pictures to take- and for good reason! Your little one will only be this small for a very short amount of time, and you'll want to remember them like this forever. The first couple of weeks after baby is born can be hectic and exhausting, however, we highly encourage you to come in for a newborn session when baby is 5-7 days old. This will allow for the most versatility and options with posing. The possibilities with newborn props are almost endless! Some parents choose to bring a clothing item they had and wore when they were babies, such as shoes or a hat. Also, a letter board with baby's name or even a banner can add personality to a photo. A headband, teddy bears, blankets, and more than one outfit are all good to bring along as well.
-3 Months-
Your baby is changing every single day! You want to make sure you don’t miss anything right? At 3 months, baby will smile and they now know who you are. Babies will interact and smile a lot at this age, and this is something that they didn't do as a newborn. Most babies will be able to have tummy time at this age. This can lead to some really cute shots of baby on their belly, looking up and smiling. If there was a specific prop or toy you brought to your newborn appointment, bring it to this one too! It can be fun to take pictures of baby with the same stuffed animal as he or she grows and changes.
-6 Months-

About this age your baby will be grabbing for toys, laughing, and sitting up!  Get imaginative with your theme or the props you bring. It doesn't have to be elaborate to be cute. The above pictures are from one of our favorite families, the Young family. They are always so creative when thinking of ideas for their baby's photo sessions.
-9 Months-
Sometimes the nine month milestone is overlooked. But don't forget this special time in your baby's life! At this age, your little one will be showing more and more personality every day, and you want to capture that! The boots that Avison has in the photo above are his grandpa's boots that he wore when he was a baby. How special is that!
-12 Months-
By this time your baby is crawling, standing with help, or even walking. Plus they have teeth! This is a milestone for sure! It all depends on your taste and style, but some props that you might like to bring for your one year old's photo session are balloons, a smash cake, or baby’s favorite stuffed animal or toy. Something that is familiar and comforting can help baby  relax if they ever feel uncomfortable.
-18 Months and Beyond-

After your baby turns one, it is a good idea to get photos every six months until they are three years old. Changes in this time happen slower, but it is still an exciting time! After baby turns three, it's very important to get photos taken every year. When your son or daughter is grown it can be fun to lay out the photos side by side from every year of their life and see how they've changed as they grow. Take advantage of all opportunities to have milestone photos taken, as we have NEVER heard a parent complain that they have too many pictures of their child!
